Naming a kitty is left to the whim or judgment of the owner, just like a parent naming a child. People have their respective choices and preferences. Actually, naming a kitten is not that easy because there are many bases for selecting the names. This will be apparent if you are the one who is going to do the choosing.
Naming a kitten by the way it looks is quite common and acceptable except that the owner sometimes fail to take into consideration the fact that the kitten will undergo physical and character changes as it grows older. So don’t be precipitate in naming your kitten. Is there a name associated with the color of his fur that comes to mind? Better still observe him for a few days for something that will inspire you. How will you describe your kitten’s character? Is he feisty and up to mischief already? It could also be that he looks like he cannot harm a fly. Naming your cat after his personality can be one of your options.
Consider also if there is another pet in the household. It will also be a good idea to name the new pet in the same fashion as the older one. Some owners choose to be unconventional and give their pets names that describe the opposite. Are there pet names that seem to be “historical” within your family? – as in “There’s always been a cat called Smudge in our family. This not exactly a novel idea, in fact it is quite common to know that a pet is named after the previous one.
It used to be that pets are named after their color or their appearance or their personality. Increasingly people are opting for real names rather than pet names when naming their four-legged friends. It is perfectly normal if you feel the same way.
You can name your pet anything you like, but there are some things that you have to consider – it must be pronounceable, not overly long, and will not make people laugh when you call it back in the park. List the names that are acceptable to you. Write the names on a small sheet of paper. Scrunch it up and place all the papers into a container. With the prior consent of all, the family member who is bestowed with the honor will then take one from the box. Whatever name is lifted out of the container, that’s kitty’s name!
